5 Tips for Polished Concrete Flooring Care and Maintenance

Polished concrete flooring has quickly become one of the most popular flooring options for both Residential and Commercial settings alike. One of the greatest benefits of this beautiful flooring type is that it is extremely low-maintenance and cost efficient. Polished concrete floors are not totally maintenance-free, but they generally are easier to maintain than other types of decorative concrete floors, since they require no waxing or sealers. While easy to maintain, that does not mean they should be neglected. You should attend to your polished concrete floors daily and weekly to ensure they maintain their gorgeous shine for years to come. Here are our tips to make sure your polished concrete stays in tip top shape:

  • Dust Mop Daily/Wet Mop Weekly : Sweep and mop to keep debris off the surface to avoid abrasion or scratches.

  • Clean with Hot Water : Use hot water for most of your cleaning needs. If you prefer a detergent, make sure the cleaner is a neutral cleaner for natural stone or concrete and diluted properly. Many different companies offer these cleaners but Zepp Neutral Floor Cleaner is one easily bought at most hardware stores. Concrete is reactive and can etch if exposed to highly acidic or alkaline chemicals.

  • Quickly Clean Up Spills : Since concrete is a porous material it is important to clean spills from the floor as quickly as possible so they don't absorb into the surface and cause staining.

  • Use Microfiber Cleaning Cloth :  Microfiber cleaning mops are highly recommended when cleaning polished concrete flooring as to reduce any scratching or wear that daily cleaning may have on your floors.

  • Call in the Professionals : We suggest calling in the professionals of Chattanooga Floor Care and Sanitizing about occasionally buffing, burnishing, recoating and more detailed up-keep. After several months of regular cleaning, your polished concrete floor may lose some of its original gloss. The specific length of time depends upon the amount of traffic, whether abrasive substances, such as sand, are tracked onto the floor and how the floor is used. However, when this does happen, the gloss can be regained by cleaning the floor with a specialized polish designed for polished concrete and buffing the floor with a high-speed burnisher.
